Seattle Parks Lifeguard Training Team

About this program

Seattle Parks and Recreation runs the Lifeguard Training Team, a free eight-week summer program that trains and certifies city teens in lifesaving skills. Participants ages 15 to 18 work through a full American Red Cross Lifeguard Training course alongside job-readiness and teamwork skills, with instruction, books, uniforms and basic materials all provided at no charge. The program runs from late June through late August, Monday through Thursday afternoons, at two beach sites: Pritchard Beach in south Seattle and West Green Lake Beach in the north. It is capped at 50 participants, 25 per location, full attendance is mandatory, and applicants must first pass a swimming skills pre-test held at an indoor pool in June. Participants test for certification at the end of the program. Seattle Parks also runs standalone Red Cross lifeguard certification and renewal courses at its indoor pools for anyone 15 and older.
