Mounger Pool
4.6Seattle, WA
Ages 0–16About this program
Summer-only outdoor pool in Magnolia, run by Seattle Parks and Recreation. Two pools sit side by side: a roughly 25-yard lap pool with a 50-foot corkscrew slide, and a warm shallow pool built for young children. Swim lessons run only during the outdoor season, in four short sessions starting the weeks of May 11, June 1, June 22 and August 3, with the main season running June 22 to September 6. Levels cover Parent and Child (6 months to 4 years), Three-Year-Olds, Preschool (4-5), Beginning and Advanced Swimmer (6-16), Skills Refresh (9-16), Adaptive and adults, and most classes meet twice a week. Mounger also fields a Summer Swim League team for ages 7-18 in late June to early August, and runs a Friday Sensory Swim hour for children with sensory processing differences or other special needs. Registration is a single spring window - scholarship families on March 24 and general registration March 31 - so families who miss it wait until the following year, and skill assessments for Advanced, Swim Team Prep and Summer Swim League have to be done at an indoor pool. Seattle Parks plans to expand Mounger's hours and lesson capacity while Queen Anne Pool is closed.
A parent writes that their 4-year-old went from clinging to their leg to leaping into the pool over one summer of lessons here, crediting patient, genuinely caring instructors; families also praise the warm shallow kids' pool with its toys and mini slide, the good lifeguards and the low pricing.
Complaints are about the facility and the drop-in experience rather than teaching: reviewers wish the pool were bigger, and one child found the deep-end swim test unfair because it required swimming face-down without goggles. Note also that it is closed for most of the year.
