Mount Baker Rowing & Sailing Center
4.5Seattle, WA
Ages 8–18About this program
Seattle Parks and Recreation's boating centre on Lake Washington at Stan Sayres Park, teaching rowing, sailing, kayaking and windsurfing to ages 8 and up. The junior crew programme is the biggest thing here: roughly 120 rowers in 8th through 12th grade, drawn from about 30 middle and high schools across the region, split into novice and experienced boys' and girls' squads with matching land conditioning classes. Mt. Baker junior crews have a long record of regional and national results. On the sailing side there are Optimist camps for ages 8-11 at beginning and intermediate levels, youth sailing camps for 11-17, and year-round youth sailing teams split by age, plus Multi-Sport Adventure Camps for 11-15 in summer. Everything runs in seasonal blocks - fall and spring rowing seasons and week-long summer camps - registered through the city's quarterly catalogue rather than on demand. Every participant must pass a 10-minute float test at a lifeguarded pool or beach before their first session on the water; the test is good for three years. Financial aid, sliding-scale fees and volunteer-exchange options are available for all classes.
Visitors praise the waterfront setting, the grassy park and boat launches, generous parking, and affordable equipment rentals with helpful staff out on the water.
Google reviews for this address are dominated by weddings and private hall rentals rather than the junior crew or sailing programmes, and the lowest ratings are all rental billing and event-staff disputes. One boater notes the on-water schedule is unusual and prone to change.
