Kirkland Parks & Community Services runs the city's low-cost youth sports leagues, clinics and camps at school gyms, parks and community centres. The flagship is the Youth Basketball League for grades 3-6 (roughly ages 8-12), where teams are built around Lake Washington School District elementary schools and play a graded, officiated winter season; Lil Hoopers introduces kindergarten through 2nd grade (about ages 6-8) to the game. Skyhawks After School Skills Academies cover basketball, soccer and flag football in 5-8 and 9-12 age bands, plus pickleball for ages 4-7 and 8-12. Other rotating offerings include McVander ball hockey, Intro to Fencing (7-12), capoeira, ice skating at Sno-King Ice Arena, a kids triathlon, tennis and golf. Nearly everything is season-specific - basketball in winter, pee wee soccer in fall and spring, camps in summer - and published each season in the Recreation Activity Guide.
