Seattle Parks and Recreation's Ballard community centre is built around an unusually active pottery studio, and its clay classes are the strongest youth arts offering in the city's northwest centres. Youth Pottery runs in six-week sessions for ages 5-7 and 8-11 at about $132, Kids at Clay is a full autumn-term class for ages 8-12 at about $364, and Parent/Tot Pottery Creations brings 2-4 year olds into the studio with a grown-up. Summer adds week-long Pottery Camps for Kids in 5-8 and 8-12 bands at about $265 a week, plus Artful Adventures Camp for 7-12 and Parent and Tot Art Adventures for the youngest. Teens 16 and up can move into the adult studio terms. Everything is sold as a fixed-date seasonal session through the city's quarterly catalogue, with community-centre registration opening Aug. 11 for fall and Dec. 8 for winter, so classes cannot be joined part-way through. The centre also runs Seattle Preschool Program classes, after-school care, sports and a free public tot room.
Families call it a true community centre and describe the pottery, preschool, after-school care, toddler gym, sports and seasonal events as all either affordable or free; staff come in for repeated praise, and the free open play area, long hours and WiFi are frequently mentioned.
