The City of Redmond Parks & Recreation youth basketball league is the department's largest youth sports programme, open to students in grades 1 through 12. Teams are assigned by the Parks Department and organised around the Lake Washington School District school each child attends, so practices stay close to home and children play alongside classmates; teams carry roughly 8-11 players and are coached by trained volunteers. Each team gets a one-hour weeknight practice in a local school gym plus Saturday games, and jerseys are provided for players to keep. The season runs on a fixed annual cycle: registration opens in August (Redmond residents first), practices start in early November, the first Saturday games are in early December, and play continues through early March around the school district's winter break. Teens aged 14-15 can volunteer through the Referee in Training programme and become paid officials at 16.
